This little gal was one of my much later customs and one of the ‘make little tiny sabino dots until your eyes cross’ (a close cousin to the ‘make little tiny appaloosa spots until your eyes cross’ paint jobs.) At some point I need to sit down and try a proper hand-detailed sabino, but I need giant reference photos. Or a friend with a horse. Possibly both.

Although the photos aren’t as clear as I’d like, I do believe this was a shaded black instead of a flat black. I got away from painting the one-paint-color colors, even with the fantasy horses, pretty quickly. When you use one solid color without any shading, they tend to lose definition. Even though the models are inherent three dimensional, the models will look 2D or ‘flat’. For blacks a little burnt umber (or deep blue) can go a long way in making them pop.

Again, this is a horse I’m proud of… but not one I’d try and haul out to a live show. While she’s got nice coloration the painting techniques aren’t anywhere in the same category as the other horses that would be on the table. I really wish there were shows for ‘people without oodles of money’. Ah well.

I did still need to work a bit on the eyes– blue eyes are much more obvious when they need work than the brown. As much as I love painting the micro minis, you’d think I’d have a better grasp of the details on the Stablemates! Ah well, always something more to learn…
