The First Hatching
The first hatchlings born without a future made their way into the world no different than any other. The hens and the foxhawks in attendance watched them carefully but the humans were oblivious to the changes. If they noticed there were more foxhawks about that normal, no one mentioned it.
May and Baron watched them carefully as well, but there was no sign that the lack of the future trees hurt them in any way.
“I wonder what They will do.” She wondered. Not that they had given them a choice, the fight with Omen had destroyed the mandatory bonding for all future foxhawks. At least the current fledglings will not have to adapt, they might now have the future to see, but they had the future to expect. They will still have the future laid out for them, to a point.
“They will pick bakers with no sense of self preservation,” said Baron wirily.
“Hey, they could do worse.” She bumped him with her hip and he grinned.
They watched their future play on the hatching floor as the hatchlings and children went on oblivious to their lack of predestination. It looked like things were going to be alright after all.
At least until the dragon found them.
