What I Learned from NaNoWriMo 2011

This post was supposed to go up yesterday, but I’m still recovering from the charge of the light brigade that took me to 50k. Nothing quite like heading into Day 29 with 13k left to write—sigh.

Rampant stupidity aside, now it’s time to look back over November and see what worked and what didn’t. Hindsight may be 20-20, but I have the memory of a drunken hamster so being able to refer to this post when planning the next NaNo is priceless! (more…)

NaNoWriMo 2011 : Day 29

Write ALL the words!

Starting Wordcount: 37,012
Goal Wordcount: 48,333

I’ll admit, I was seriously thinking about throwing in the towel last night. After a family vacation that turned out to be too much fun to pause and write in, I’m catastrophically behind where I should be in terms of wordcount.

This morning didn’t look much brighter, but I knew there was one trick I had left up my sleeve…

World-building. (more…)

NaNoWriMo 2011 : Day 20

Grind, Grind, Grind

Starting Wordcount: 21,304
Goal Wordcount: 33,333

This year’s NaNo novel was pretty much a giant mess of a mess as of yesterday. Thanks to a Hulu marathon of Once Upon A Time and Grimm I was able to pull the story apart and rebuild it to match what I’d written already. Scarily it wasn’t as hard to fit the pieces together as I had thought, which means my subconscious is getting better at this whole ‘novel writing’ thing! (more…)

NaNoWriMo 2011 : Day 15

Not a Happy Graph

Starting Wordcount: 17,038 (from Day 14)
Goal Wordcount: 25,000

This wasn’t the sort of graph I was expecting to see at the halfway point. Not with all the Good Ideas™, and Thematic Themes™, and Plotty-bits™ that I’d managed to work out in October. There’s a solid story here, I can feel the bones of the idea—I’m just having problems getting my teeth into it.

To be fair, I also wasn’t expecting quite the rally I had last year (where I ended up ten thousand words ahead) but I was planning on having that little brown line a smidge higher than where it is.

And by ‘smidge’ I mean ‘at least eight thousand words.’ (more…)

NaNoWriMo 2011 : Day 10

Current Wordcount: 12,525 (from Day 6)
Goal Wordcount: 16,667

As expected, I succumbed to the normal November Martian Death Flu, which means I got nothing done since the kick-ass write-in on Sunday. Thankfully I ended up a day ahead at the end of that write-in, so I’m not as far behind as I might have been.

That still leaves me with four thousand plus words to write today in order to catch up again—and I’m not feeling it. I’ve got some ideas kicking around, so it won’t be a zero wordcount day, but I’m still fighting off the last of the cold/flu-thingy, so I’m probably going to zonk out relatively soon after I get home. (more…)
