Dogs of the Never Never’verse

Ghost Dogs and Deer (and people), Minimal magic usage

There is a Veil that divides Life from Death and keeps the dead at bay. Ghostly packs of hunting hounds patrol the border, drawing power from their human anchors. Their bond is a tradition nearly as old as Life itself, but that is about to change…

Welcome to a world of non-magical companion humans and the dogs that tolerate them!

About the ‘Verse

This ‘verse was born in my NaNoWriMo 2007 novel, which faltered to a stop at 24,387 words. It started out as a fun stab at trying to flip the idea of magical companion animals, but got mired in the world building. It’s hard to write stories when the world itself is the giant plot hole. :p

But it was still a fun idea, so I’ve been back to gnaw on the bones of the idea ever since. For the 2015 NaNoWriMo I decided to try resurrecting it for good via the time honored traditional MuseFic. If all goes well, One-Word Title will hash out the troubles with the world building and get this ‘verse back on track!

[One-Word Title] (Unfinished, but in progress)

This was my NaNoWriMo 2015 attempt at resurrecting the Dogs of the Never Never novel. It’s a combination of MuseFic, outlines, revised drafts and (oddly) an actual story…

These are listed in roughly chronological order. Daily Snippits are just random writing, Works-in-Progress (WiP) are so noted, and everything else is a finished work.

Dogs of the Never Never (Unfinished and Semi-abandoned)
Jonathan Black has spent his life fighting for the right to just be Jon. Hounded by teachers, his boss, and even his fast tracking big sister, to stop ‘wasting his potential’, Jon is bound and determined to reject the corporate rat race and everything that it stands for.

Akela’s pack has just lost its Huntsman and they’ve got no time to lose. These ethereal Dogs guard the Veil between life and death and come hell or high water Jon’s going to help them do it.

This was my NaNoWriMo 2009 and novel and the underlying universe fell out from under me during the month. I’ve got an idea on how to glue it back together, but for now it’s mostly MuseFic and broken logic.
