I very rarely paint plain black horses, outside of custom orders, so this was my stab at getting the color in hand. I was trying my best to stay away from the dreaded ‘flat black’ color, since it’s not very realistic. Thus I read up as much as I could from other customizers before I started mixing the paint.
Although it’s hard to tell, this little guy has burnt umber, dark blue, and even a hint of purple mixed into the black. They are all in such faint shadings that it’s more or less impossible to capture them with the camera (at least not with my photography skills).
I think he came out rather well and it’s definitely a color I’ll like to try again. I’ll have to paint a comparison horse flat black, just so I can show you what they look like next to each other.
And then maybe turn the flat black into another doodle horse… hmm.
