Mold: Andalusian (G2)
Color: Orange Faux-Quail (Northern Bobwhite)
Medium: Liquitex Artist Color Acrylics (Gesso, Cadmium Orange, Mars Black, Brilliant Orange) and Sargent Art Chalk Pastels
Status: Painted July 2013 and Donated to Big Orange Bash
I had good intentions with this year’s donation to the Big Orange Bash, but life threw me a few curve balls and I got him finished up seriously late. (The show date was June 15!) Thankfully the showholder is a) very forgiving and b) can still use him, so he’ll be out in the mail in the near future.
I think I’ll start next year’s donation tomorrow…
Last year I did a play on the state stone, this year I’m taking a stab at the state bird– abet a slightly abstract version thereof.
The Northern Bobwhite has some striking patterns that I tried to mimic, but they didn’t end up fitting quite as well on a horse as I had hoped. Thus this little guy is a look a little cat-like in places, although handsomely so (I hope).
Next time I’m just going to take a page from Shauna’s book and give him wings! 😉
He was painted in multiple layers of pastels and acrylics, which gives his shading a nice rich depth. Orange depth, but depth.
As always, orange (like purple) hates my digital camera so you’ll have to imagine the extra oomph that exists in real life.Big Orange Bash Donation 2013 Big Orange Bash Donation 2013 Big Orange Bash Donation 2013 Big Orange Bash Donation 2013 Big Orange Bash Donation 2013 Big Orange Bash Donation 2013
