1. It took them longer than they’d admit to realize something was slowly blocking out the stars.

2. Somewhere in the house there’s a matching fuzzy green sock — but there’s only five minutes until the taxi arrives and a screaming toddler who refuses to leave without it.

3. Every family living in Forests Edge has one set of fighting gear and one person in each generation trained on how to use it. The last war was centuries ago, but lessons like that are impossible to forget.

4. “I don’t care if I got the job, I don’t want it!”

5. Healing magic requires a sacrifice to compensate for the time and energy it would have taken to heal normally. Most people offer up excess fat and muscle to pay the tithe, but he’s got nothing left and no time, so he pays with an arm instead.
