1. Over the weeks the wyrm slowly devours the station, the constant bass rumble of its chewing driving even the calmest scientists to cursing.

2. Winter is the time of forsaken burdens. With the dawn of the first snow, we write them onto scraps of the thin peeling bark and toss them into the fire. In the spring, if they were worth keeping, we pick them up again.

3. It’s an old familiar family argument, sharp edges worn away over the decades to friendly teasing, but underneath the patchwork is a rift that will never heal. 

4. “You’ve made all the easy decisions,” they said as the piles of paperwork shifted again. “All that’s left now are the hard ones.”

5. They fled through the portal and into the teeth of a blizzard. Snow drifts encased the steps in a thick icy crust and bitterly cold winds threatened to send them tumbling with every step.
