1. As he settles into the pilot’s chair, there’s a click that echoes in his bones. The neural net connections spark to life in a teeth-clenching ache as the old magic shudders awake.
2. “You weren’t supposed to survive,” she objected with a baffled frustration that almost made him feel guilty.
3. The library smells of the mountains before a storm, beaches in the hot summer sun, and grandmother’s bread fresh from the ovens. She stills for a moment as it rolls over her, caught on the threshold of impossible things, and then steps inside.
4. With a crack, the rotten tree limb finally gives way and, in the worst kind of irony, takes out the internet, but not the power.
5. The dragon is too young to fly, but also too young to kill. Heavy nesting scales protect it from what few weapons he has available, but force it to waddle around in search of food. The sheep are safe, his campsite less so.
