1. Around the edges of the crater, the magic is bearable, the spicy bite of the volcano’s fire tempered by the soothing chill of the island’s unnatural fog.

2. “You’re three dollars short.”

3. She watches as evening rolls across the space station, lights dimming and ceilings fading to transparency to show the endless starscape around them.

4. It wasn’t as bad having Clotho as a college roommate as I expected. Sure, Lachesis was prone to dropping in to check on how her little sister was doing and giving me these measuring looks, but at least Atropos left us alone. …Except for that one time, but I don’t like to think about that.

5. He piles towels in front of the leaking dishwasher to soak up the water because it’s easier to wash the towels than dishes.
