1. “Stop. Following. Me,” he hisses, but the goose just makes a sort of amused muted honk-mumble and waddles onwards.
2. You can patent technology, not magic, so she stamps the inventions rejected as soon as she sees the signs. The two are ridiculously easy to tell apart no matter how much the Clarke’s Law adherences object.
3. In the early mornings, when the fog hangs heavy in the air, muffling the bustle of a town stirring itself from slumber, if you squint, just a little, you can convince yourself the world really does end at the turn in the road.
4. The ship pauses to feed on sunlight as they pass by a friendly star system, opening wide gossamer wings that dwarf her hull, reducing the freighter to a tiny spider in a massive web. And if she catches an asteroid or two, it’s accidental, not illegal mining… even if the nanobots make quick work of them, tucking the raw materials away for future growth.
5. Five minutes past the crest of the hill, the lights from the city begin to fade. As they move down into the valley, things quiet and settle and the pleasantly oily feel of the river’s magic rises.
