1. The payphone rings again, harsh and jarring against the foggy, liminal space of the abandoned gas station.
2. Throughout our childhood tiny glass bottles washed up along the beaches near the cottage. Tightly sealed with wax and stuffed with miniature parchments full of mermaid stories written in glittering sea-green ink.
3. Can you feel it?” The peryton bowed its head, touching the tips of its antlers to the pool. “The magic of the north wind lurks in the ice-melt if you have the gift to sense it.”
4. Every long-haul spaceship had at least two ‘spares’, crewmembers whose only job was to wait for the inevitable to happen and then step in to pick up the slack.
5. Being dead was awesome, but staying dead turned out to be a lot harder than he’d expected.
