Fresh Pages and Cold Starts

β€œYou must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you.” Writing quote by Ray Bradbury

The new year brings a nice blank slate and a whole lot of ‘things I meant to do’ that haven’t gotten done yet! πŸ˜‚

2021 was an interesting sort of year in terms of writing. I did get a lot of things done, but none of them really added up to anything I can point to as ‘look what I made!’

I’m hoping to be a little more productive this year, both in terms of finishing up old projects as well as getting some new writing out there. So far January is off to a good start…

I have the 2021 yearly collection of Saturday Story Prompts set to release on 1/15 and the 2020 yearly collection set to release on 1/29.

I’ve revised the 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 collections and am busy working my way through the rest of the ‘skipped’ years.

I’ll be trying to release one for free every other weekend, so keep an eye out on my Amazon page to pick up any you’re missing!

I’m in the midst of reformatting the 31 Days of Dragon and Space ebooks and creating printable workbooks for Etsy and the shop here. (Flames and Magic have already been redone.)

I am a little sad at the moment because someone left me a slate of 3-star reviews– not because of the reviews themselves, but because it means someone spent money (and/or time) on the books and didn’t like them. I wish there was a way to offer folks their money back!

Oh well, I’m holding on to the fact that they were 3’s and not 1’s and the person was probably more of a ‘meh, these weren’t that good’ and less of a ‘I hate these! RAR!’ πŸ˜…

I do have one new 31 Days of… ebook planned for each month this year, crossing my fingers I can pull that off!

Thursday's Child Has Far To Go - Martha Bechtel - Twitter

On a story-writing note, I’ve picked up the Too Old For Neverland ‘verse again and am working on the next chapter of Thursday’s Child.

It’s been an interesting re-read, going back over the most recent drafts of things and the Scribophils reviews. I think the first story of the ‘verse is as good as it’s going to get (for now), so I’ll be posting that soon and moving on to the second one.

I had been poking around with the idea of trying to chase traditional publishing with these– but after much reflection, I think I’d rather just release them out to be read.

I’ll put together the ebook collection of them (and hopefully a paperback!) at some point.

But for now… I just want to get back into writing again! 😁

Borrowed Wings - eBook Cover - Twitter

On the ‘release things to the wild’ note, I’m still trying to figure out what to do with Borrowed Wings.

Part of me wants to wait until the whole thing is 100% complete… and the other part wants to do it as a proper serial story and use audience feedback to tweak things as it goes.

I really miss the old days of LiveJournal and fan fiction where there was pretty much an instantaneous response from readers if you were going in a bad direction.

I’m also a tad jealous of all the six-figure stories out there! πŸ˜‚

The mailing list will also (soon) LIVE AGAIN! πŸŽ‰

I’m not sure if I’ll start it up again in January or wait until February 1st, but I’m finally at the place where I have enough content to send one.

For 2022 the list will mostly be updates on how the art and writing are going, but I will try and include at least one freebie item in each to keep folks entertained.

The end goal is to get my Patreon up and rolling this year, so I’ll be using the mailing list to test out what sort of stuff gets folks to open the emails.

TL;DR

So far this month I’ve gotten a lot of formatting done, a small spattering of new writing… and planned a bunch of plans!
