1. Out here at the edges of human space, it’s safer to amputate– mechanical limbs are more advanced than the alien’s surgical techniques.

2. “No one deserves a second chance. Not him, not me– not here. Not anymore.”

3. The dragon’s roar starts deep enough to vibrate his bones but ends in a high-pitched scream.

4. Suspended animation is supposed to be dreamless, but he’s never had a trip without waking up grasping at the fading wisps of a dream and feeling that he’s forgetting something important.

5. He paused the bike at the foot of the hill, dead tired but determined to prove all of them wrong. He had until sunset and that was still plenty of time.
