1. It could have been terrifying knowing that there would never be secrets here. Lachesis had already seen the whole of her life, good and bad, but Melony found it oddly comforting instead.

2. The ancient interface was caked with dust, but it slowly warmed to the touch as the city awoke from hibernation. If their luck held and the AI was intact, they’d finally have a teacher with first-hand knowledge of the war.

3. “I thought I fired you.”

“You did, but HR seems to think the lawsuit wouldn’t be worth it.” He dropped the paperwork on the desk. “So have fun in Nebraska, this is my store now.”

4. It’s no secret that casinos are rigged against magic so when the telltale puff of purple rises from the blackjack table in front of a human, the dealer is more annoyed than alarmed. Some street fae is selling parlor tricks again.

5. When the rare king tides roll in the water creeps up over the crest of the dunes and laps at the edges of my front deck. For those few hours, there’s nothing between me and the horizon but the sea and it’s enough to make any man feel small. In another hundred years, the waves will have worn away the stones my great-grandfather laid, but for now, it’s safe to sit back in the hammock and raise a glass to that eventual surrender.
