1. He almost catches the cup, but it bounces off his fingers and covers the desk with soda.

2. The plant life that has seeped in through the magic portal is familiar but wrong in subtle ways. Pine trees whose new growth starts out a bright magenta pink instead of green and fades slowly to a deep royal purple, dot the sides of the valley.

3. Clouds dance across the sky to the rhythm of the jump rope songs.

4. She loves planetfall as much as Perri hates it. The rush of gravity as the planet takes over for the shipboard systems, the dull roar of reentry muffled by the hull– she can almost reach out and touch what it must have felt like to risk life and limb aboard those first few interplanetary craft.

5. “I spent a long time looking for reasons at the bottom of a test tube.” He looked down at the shattered remnants of the workbench. “I’m here to save you from making the same mistakes.”
