For every time Atlantis survived the rising, there were a hundred universes where she didn’t.

A hundred empty rooms waiting on the other side of a locked quantum mirror, an Ancient looking glass into the myriad might-have-beens. But the rooms weren’t always empty and more often than not there was another John there, haggard and lean, staring back into that same window of possibilities.

He chatted with them some nights, passing back and forth stories that had never happened, but in the end, they’d always say their goodbyes and move on, restlessly searching for the city where he wasn’t alone.
