Penguin #001 Star Trek Science Officer… Just Because!

Penguin #001 Star Trek TOS Science Officer

I have a friend who loves Star Trek: The Original Series and penguins.. and I like making things for people, so penguins away! 😀  (This little guy actually made in February, I’ve still got a lot of catching up to do!)

This is the first of the resin penguin casts which came from the Silicone Caulk and Cornstarch mold making post. I have to say, I’ve had a lot of fun with him and his Imperial Guard sibling, so I have a feeling he’s the start of a small penguin fandom army. He’s roughly an inch and a half tall and two inches wide and is the perfect size for the large neodymium magnets.

I didn’t do any resculpting on the penguin mold itself, but I did clean up the casting a bit. I probably need to perfect a resin master and recast. *pokes mold* Still, I think he turned out rather nicely for a first attempt! 🙂

As always, click to embiggen!

Not the best fit…

The penguin is a pretty basic black and white, but its pattern is based on the wide variety of cartoon versions. Oddly enough the only real-life version that’s close is the Royal Penguin and this little guy is missing the cool eyebrows. Something to think about for next time.

The Science Officer shirt is a mix of and white gesso. The gold stripes and emblem are . Painting that little tiny emblem took me quite a few tries! (Even with the magnifying glass.) I ended up sealing the blue shirt and then carefully painting the insignia on top. That made it a lot easier to wipe off the mistakes.

Penguin #001 Star Trek TOS Science Officer Tricorder

The tricorder was sculpted out of two-part epoxy and the shoulder strap is a bit of leather from my tack-making bin. I wanted to make it removeable (because overkill, I can haz), but in order to get the strap over his head it had to be a rather unwieldy length.

I tried a couple of things, including folding it up behind the magnet, but eventually realized I needed to make some sort of clasp.

My first idea was to just fold it behind the magnet so the front looked good, but it still came off… so I ended up Frankensteining a closure using velcro dots. Not the best method, but it’s good enough for now.

Onto the next penguin! 😀
