There’s something inherently cruel about holidays that celebrate what you’ve lost, so one by one they’ve let them slip away, forgotten as the years roll by. A double handful of cultures’ traditions fading into the sea, because they’d made the choice knowing what they’d have to leave behind, but it doesn’t make it hurt any less. So there are no Hallmark Holidays, no solemn reminders of who and what they’d left across that blue horizon. Instead they focus on each other, tight and fierce, each birthday, award, event, celebrated because it’s what they have, what they are.

And that’s enough.
