2. Once we learn how to generate energy without a star, the wide empty places of the universe becomeĀ our playground.

3. Learning how not to use magic is much harder than she’s feared. She can feel it pooling around her, a heavy humidity of potential that tugs at her fingertips, and the closer they get to the city the more insistent it becomes.

4. Mother went into the forest once, when she was younger, and Grandmother swears it was someone else who walked out in her skin.

5. One bright spring morning everyone’s cellphones stopped working.
