His siblings called him Ant, short for Antoine, because they knew he hated it. His Dad, oblivious, called him his Army Ant, inheritor of well-worn footprints from four generations of Army doctors. Even in school, the nickname found him.
When he joined the Marines, it was because they called him Bellany.
But they call him Ant now, and it isn’t because of the old reasons he left behind. It’s because when it came down to the impossible or death, he carried someone twice his size back through three miles of jungle to the gate.
And now, somehow, the nickname fits.
