It was only a song, rife with sickeningly sweet lyrics of loss and longing. Nothing more than a passing fad and yet… Snape found himself humming it, when he least expected. It wasn’t quite the same when he sang it, quietly singing to himself as he repaired the damage. And if the student gave him odd looks, he ignored them. And if McGonagall gave him a measuring glare during staff meetings, he could bear that too.

Because he just couldn’t help himself whenever that child was around.
