“You never asked me why.”

Snape looked up from his book, but Lupin was still staring into the fireplace. “Is that a question?” He waited until the werewolf gave in and nodded faintly. “I didn’t ask because I didn’t want to know,” Snape snorted. “And I still don’t.”

“Why?” Lupin prodded the fire with the poker, sending sparks dancing like memories.

“Because I think I know the answer.” Now Remus looked at him. “You saved me because you couldn’t save Harry.” And there was the confirmation he hadn’t wanted to see. With a sigh Snape went back to his book.
