“You could have stopped them.”

“Could I?” Lupin didn’t look away from the picture of the Marauders, just ran his fingers over the glass of the display case. “Well yes, I could have tried.” Turning he gave Snape an apologetic look. “I could have killed you.”

“You’re hardly the only one with that distinction.” The Slytherin headmaster sniffed, trying to bait his rival into old habits, disturbed by the layer of resigned guilt.

“I’m sorry.”

Snape gave him a scathing look. “You would be.” He paused for a moment, expecting a response, then snorted. “You make a pathetic werewolf.”

“Thanks.”
