It wasn’t a question, hadn’t been one for years, but every time he woke back from the darkness, he thought I’m not dead yet? Because there was no time in the cold, just overwhelming darkness; flashes of nothing that splintered his life into slivers of light.

The faces were never the same, but he’d learned not to let them explain. Too much time, too much life, was lost to the nothing. He let them run their tests and trials, and went back into the darkness carrying empty promises of ‘next time’ and ‘almost’.

And his last thought, every time, was–
