1. She had a story ready if anyone asked her where she’d been— but no one did so she dutiful recited it to Mr. Bear instead.

2. “But I didn’t—”

“Food means things,” he said more sharply than intended and sighed at her hurt look. “Just don’t feed anyone else, at least until I can explain.”

3. Real humans could do anything but cry.

4. Sleight of hand was almost as effective as sleight of mind at lifting wallets and deft fingers were much less likely to catch the eye of the gargoyles that ringed the marketplace.

5. The glass millipede unwound from the trunk, its carapace gleaming gold and silver in the fractured sunlight.
