They’d forgotten what it was like, living in a war zone. Forgotten the sharpness, the bite it brought to everything. Each moment, each action, might be their last for a hundred reasons outside of their control, and maybe a handful within. So they lived for those moments they could control, steady in the face of fear, falling back into old habits they thought they’d outgrown.

And they tried not to be insulted when the other scientists looked at them sideways, tried not to remind them in clipped tones and accented English that some countries hadn’t shared the luxury of peace.
