Bækhesten

Bækhesten

This little guy was the epitome of a wild tangent– he was supposed to be a black splatterpaint roan, but took a took a sharp turn at the absurd right after I got the basecoat done.

Bækhesten is a customized Breyer Stablemate G3 Mustang in a pseduo-watercolor bay. He’s actually the only horse I’ve painted with this method… I don’t know if I could manage to pull it off again!

Named after the Scandinavian version of the Kelpie, Bækhesten has been lounging around on my shelves taking a vacation and waiting for me to get some decent photos. After some lightbox tweaking (a post on that later this week!) he’s finally ready to gallop off to Etsy.

No clue if I’ll try this technique again, but it was fun to play with. It consists of painting a nice solid base of white gesso and then watering down the acrylics to the point where they’re just a wash. Then I dripped the paint onto the horse and rotated him around to get it to flow across the gesso. You have to keep adding drops of paint as it gets soaked in, to keep things moving so it’s a bit like those wooden puzzles where you tilt it to get the ball out of the maze.

Have to say, if this guy doesn’t sell I’m not going to feel a little sorry– he’s one of the Wild Tangents that turned out better than I had expected! 😀

Medium: Gesso, Liquitex Artist Color Acrylics (Gesso, Mars Black, Phthalocyanine Green, Dioxazine Purple, Phthalocyanine Blue)
Status: Painted June 2012 and SOLD!

I’m so glad you like him! 😀

Good luck with your show and let me know how he does! I love hearing about my little guys once they’ve headed off– it’s sort of like sending out messages in bottles; always a blast to see where they end up and what adventures they’ve had along the way. 🙂
