Nachtlied Is German for ‘Night Song’ and this started the dark bay German silliness that followed in Nachtmaus and Nachtkatze. I know that these little guys are probably renamed as soon as they head out the door to their new owners, but coming up with names is one of my favorite parts of the process.

As you can tell from the photos, Nachtlied was one of my later horses. She has the horizontal shading on the hooves and glossed eyes that became a default as I worked. She’s a nice plain basic dark day and I’m really pleased with the way she turned out overall.

The shading on her stomach looks a bit odd on the left side, but that might be a result of the camera seeing things I can’t.

It’s odd what the camera will bring into focus sometimes—you can get a lot more contrast between the colors and shadings than you’d see with the model in-hand. It’s something I need to fiddle with as we go on, so I can try and get the photos as true to life as possible.
