Change is Good
“You’ve change a lot you know,” Baron said, looking out across the water.
“I know,” said May.
“It’s a good thing I think,” Baron said, turning to look at her. “You seem older.”
“I am older you doof,” she pointed out, “three years is a long time, and my life hasn’t exactly been all soft pillows and long weekends.”
“But it’s a good thing.”
“It’s a thing,” she sighed, “we can’t undo any of it. Some days I wish I could—it would be so nice to be the person I had planned on being.”
“Before Omen?”
“Before the ships left the Empire to come here.” She said. “Omen was born for a war, I think the war would have happened without him though.”
“I wonder if we would have won.”
“I don’t think so.” She looked down at the ships. “Without Omen we’d have no magic at all and without that we wouldn’t have made it to the oracle.”
“But without magic they wouldn’t have found what they were looking for.” Pointed out Baron, “The first storm would have been the only storm, and maybe they would have given up looking.”
“But they still would have found us, and once we’re found we can’t go back.” May said. “At least not the easy way. Would anyone have thought of this? Without the oracle?”
“Maybe not.” Baron admitted.
“Then yeah, it was a good thing.” She decided after a moment.
