Letters Home
Writing her first letter home was harder than she thought it would be. While in person visits were not encouraged in the first few weeks, the new riders were heavily encouraged to write home to their families. So they found themselves banished to the barracks for the last few hours before the mail wagons went out assigned the project of writing home.
She kept the letter light and somewhat cheerful. Pointing out the best of the situation, but knowing her parents were not idiots, she also touched on the less than joyful aspects of the change. She tried not to harp too much on what she’d lost by coming to the service and made sure to include the fact that she and Aaron were still determined to make the engagement work. Somehow.
Since she was writing her parents she also included descriptions of the clothing and styles and fabrics and colors. All things they’d need to know, in order to anticipate the trends that would be working their way out of the city and into the towns. Not everyone had the money to buy new clothes, but there were always ways to dress up existing garments and her mother made just as much money off trim and artful patchwork.
After some thought she wrote another letter to her uncle, letting him know the situation and asking if he could stop by to talk things out sometime soon. He’d have to pick up another apprentice; he was too close to retirement to wait for her to get out. Still, hopefully he might have room for Aaron, even if it meant May was regulated to a secondary position in the bakery.
It felt odd not writing a letter to Aaron and she wondered if felt the same way. They had not had much chance to talk, beyond that one quick meeting and she missed his lengthy missives.
