Rescue!

The next heartbeat May looked up at the startled roars of the assembled foxhawks as the black fledgling lunged through the crowds, then leaped at her knocking her backward to the ground. He forced those around her back with a violent sweep of his wings, hiding her from the view of the crowds.

“Mine.” He chortled down at her, mental voice frantically begging, then turned to scream over his shoulder at the golden, a mixture of anger and despair. “MINE.”

He looked back at her again, “Pleasepleaseplease.”

May started up at yellow-rimmed eyes, pupils blown so wide that the yellow was only a thin circle. The hatchling was panicking and she had no idea why, but for a moment she did not understand what he was asking.

“No!” It was the very last things she wanted, she had plans, she had a future, she had– she did not know anymore. It was all happening too fast and she felt like the world had been turned upside down. “Why?” And she said it with the same amount of desperation as Baron was pleading.

So he broke the first of their Laws, the strongest and the deepest and the one he would die for breaking.

He showed her the tree.
