Other Fish in the Sea
Once Baron wrapped his mind around the idea that he was going to have to choose another rider, he started harassing Minder for all of the rules and details surrounding the choice. In theory, he could go without a rider completely, but it would be near impossible to earn his place in the Warren without one.
The basic he knew, he was not allowed to choose someone that was already matched to a foxhawk that had been laid. He was not allowed to choose someone who was too young or too old for federal service. He was not allowed to choose anyone with ‘undesirable’ characteristics—not that he’d want to spend ten years partnered to someone with no moral compass.
Minder was actually the only person he talked to about this, the other hatchlings got nervous when he talked about it and some of the elder foxhawks seemed to take it as a personal flaw that he had lost his rider.
So he spent most of his time daydreaming about finding the perfect partner by himself.
He’d pick someone small and light so that they could do the most wonderful tricks when flying. Someone noble and brave and willing to charge into battle to save the kingdom on a moment’s notice. He made up long intricate stories about how they saved the world and all the honors and respect they’d win for their efforts.
Just like any other kid who ends up at the bottom of the heap, he dreamt of redemption.
