Graduation Day
Graduation from school was a small, simple affair. Since everyone was counted from their birthdays and not the calendar year the classes increased and decreased throughout the year. May graduated in a class of one, but the ceremonies were held weekly when there were more than one graduating and she’d wanted to wait until Cybil was out as well.
Professor Daniel presented them with the hammered brass pins with their name and town heraldry stamped into the metal. The pins went in their belts, next to the pins from primary school and marked them as ready to face the world. Or at least more of the world than Two Beaches.
There was a small party afterwards and her parents presented her with gifts not only from themselves but from Aaron as well. He’s sent an embroidered headscarf to her hair out of her way while baking. She could tell he’d done the embroidery himself, from the odd technique that was his trademark mending stitch. It was done with loaves of bread and sheaves of wheat, in and interlocking pattern. He’d also worked in the two anchors from Two Beaches heraldry as well as a fish with rabbit ears—an old joke from when they were younger.
Her parents gave her new aprons and strong sturdy working clothes as well as two pairs of fancy skirts and blouses, meant for city wear. She’d be off to her uncle’s at the end of the month and this would serve her well in the city.
Cybil parents had given her similar gifts, though hers were meant to attract the eye of a fiancé at the hatching. She had gone to school in order to master the finer arts of town administration and had her eye set on a council seat ever since she was young. Since that did not pay well at all she was on the lookout for a spouse that could support her.
Cybil was looking outside the town, but wanted to remain in Two Beaches. It was a harder match to make than most, so she’d been turning up the hunt these last two hatchings. If she did not find anything this time she was thinking about going to one of the matchmakers in Oak Grove.
There were traveling matchmakers, but those came through once a year and Cybil was not willing to wait until they came around again. She’d talked to them before and had never heard back, so the chances were better if she went into the city.
Worst case, she’d continue to work for her parents while pursuing the council seat. They would be able to support her for a while, but her future hinged on finding another method of support.
