This little guy was a nice solid dark bay without a lot of chrome. He was one of the few horses I painted based on a reference photo, and I think he turned out rather well. The non-black nose does look a little odd, but it was on the real horse… an example of life not imitating art trends, I suppose.
Tornado was part of my photo show string (as you can tell by the backgrounds) and did decently. The warmblood division tended to be dominated by flashier sport horses and at the time chrome was king, so he placed as expected. Still, I got some nice comments back from the judges and he was snapped up on eBay his first time out.
I think if I painted him again I’d tone the hooves a bit more yellow than pink and I’d darken the nose. It might not match the source as well, but it would look more ‘right’ in the context of other customs.
