This little gal is a custom painted Breyer G2 Stablemate Scrambling Foal that was painted with a combination of acrylics and pastels into a dappled buckskin that I am irrationally proud of!
I’ve painted quite a few buckskins, but this is one of the few horses that came out almost exactly as I picture it in my head before I started. I’m not sure if the dappling would be this apparent with a foal coat, but I’m going to claim artistic license on that one. ?
This little gal was a custom order, which you can tell from the non-punny name, and was one of the very very popular Add-a-Foal sales. I must remember in the future not to offer folks a $5 foal, even if it’s a very good way to move out my overstock. (In all fairness, I painted a lot of foals a lot of colors and it was very good for both practice painting and prepping.)
The Add-a-Foal slot was sold 12/14/2004 so this little gal was painted in December 2004 or January 2005. (I’m going with 2004 for the Model Horse Gallery.)
There are some other minor things I’d tweak if I could, but since the photos are almost twice again as big as the actual model, a lot of the ‘faults’ are things most folks wouldn’t notice. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if Live Show judges picked them out immediately.
Still, quibbles aside, this is one of the realistic colored horses that I am very proud of. I know when I pick up a paintbrush again it will take me a bit to get back to this level, but I’m looking forward to it!
