This little guy was a custom order and one of the few gray horses that I have painted. His name comes from the fact that I was in the middle of painting him when I had an emergency trip to Arizona for a week. The customer was very understanding about the delay and I decided to name him in honor of the unexpected tangent.

Unlike the other grays I have painted, this guy is a solid color. It’s an easier paintjob, but I think the blending turned out well and I’m very happy with the tobiano pattern.

Arizona’s pattern was much more complex and I was trying to be more ‘true’ to the actual patterns found in nature. It wasn’t based off of any photographic references, but it was done using the wondering painting reference book Color Formulas & Techniques by For the Model Horse Artist by C. Williams.

I loaned my copy out years ago, so I’ll have to buy another at some point (apparently once they start printing it again. *sigh*)
