Tos chewed a burr on his paw, glaring at the back of his Huntsman’s head. Akela chose Jon on whim, scenting hints of old Huntsman blood in the human’s lineage; echoes of a time when pack bonds were more than ceremonial.

Hounds needed Huntsmen to anchor them to the mortal world, but that’s all they were good for. Fragile mortal things– The old ways were dead and buried for a reason, why fight that lost war again?

But Akela was determined to make a proper Huntsman out of Jon, even if it killed him.
