It wasn’t that Ship wouldn’t let him, he knew that even if he didn’t want to admit it, he knew she couldn’t fight the ones and zeros that herded her programming into compliance. But still, it couldn’t hurt to try

“Not even a little?”

“Regulations state–”

“I just need a tablespoon, just a smidge, comeon kid–”

“Biological samples must remain in quarentine for–”

“It’s not samples, it’s coffee!”

“Biological samples–”

“Oh never mind.” He gave up trying to rescue the tin of ground coffee he’d bartered for on the last colony planet. Next time he’d just have to find something other than the sampling jars to store it in.
