“Wait, you want me to what?” David stopped with one foot in the helicopter, shouting to be heard over the roar of the blades. Nicky just shook her head and mouthed that she couldn’t hear him with the headset on. He almost stepped back, common sense warring with his normally irresistible curiosity. Common sense lost out, again, as his subconscious insisted that she hadn’t really said that the last crew member had been eaten by turtles. She must have meant that the turtles had damaged the equipment somehow. The mental image of a flock of box turtles nipping at a cameraman’s boots was more amusing than threatening.
Once he was in the helicopter she passed back a headset so he could join in the on the conversation.
“So, you said turtles ate the camera?” He leaned in between the pilot and Nicky, trying to catch a glimpse of the map.
“Nope!” She fished a blurry photo out of her pocket and passed it back to him. “I said they ate the cameraman.”
